The following is my Social Impact focused “Shadow Portfolio”. Because I am not an accredited investor, I am not able to actually invest into these companies. But, if I were able to I would, and the reasons as to why are listed below. Take a look and let me know what you think.
If you find any companies that you find interesting, let me know and I would be more than happy to make an introduction for you!
| Name | Current Stage | Current Fundraising | Notable Investors | Founding Team Notes | Reason for Investment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Both& | Pre-Seed | <$1MM | Gaingels, Charlee Cora, Lachy Groom | Finn and team are all incredibly tied into this cause. They have all either led design efforts at high-fashion brands or successfully exited previous clothing startups. | Finn and I connected over LinkedIn about a year ago now. After hearing about their story and how people who are living and identifying as non-binary are struggling to find clothes that not only fit, but allow them to demonstrate their own sense of style, I was in. Their mission is solid and their CAC is extremely low, thanks to TikTok and other social media marketing efforts. They have also sold out every single line of clothing they have put on the market to date! |
| RadSwan | Seed | $2MM | BBG, Female Founders Fund, Pritzker Group VC | Frédérique is a fashion-blogger with an incredibly large following, past marketing manager, stylist, and marketer. Her “co-create” methodology has developed this brand into something similar to a community building platform, demonstrating her ability to build a following and community around a product! | After learning about RadSwan and speaking with some friends, I began to see just how important a product and company like this is. They are bridging the gap for and empowering their customers to truly feel like themselves, and that is something I believe everyone has the right to. |
| Grapevine Health | Seed | $276k (grant) | Grant Funded (National Science Foundation) | Lisa Fitzpatrick, MD, MPH, MPA, founder and CEO, is an infectious disease physician, past Aspen Institute Health Innovator Fellow, and former Chief Medical Officer for the DC Medicaid program. The rest of the team stands up to her impressive background just as well. | Health content is typically boring and specifically targeted at certain groups of people. This has been proven to lead to disparities in those who actively seek care and has also caused gaps in understanding of medicine and the available treatments to those who need them most. Closing these gaps and building these bridges will empower people to seek care how and when they need it, and Grapevine is doing the work worth doing. |
| Motivote | Pre-Seed | $500k | Forum Ventures, Right Side, Quake Capital Partners | The founding team all have advance degrees in public service or administration. The advisors and other team members are well established, well-known innovators and serial entrepreneurs in the public service space. | Voting has quickly become more and more important as basic human rights are blatantly and constantly challenged at the highest levels of our governmental system. We need to engage and motivate young voters to take part and make their voices known using technology streams that capture their attention. Motivote is doing just that in a way that is unbiased and unpartisan. |
| Open Water | Seed | $340k | CircleUp | Women, minority, and LGBTQA+ owned, Nic and Jess are both graduates for the University of Miami, and Nic is an MBA from Booth. Toral, the Sales and Strategy Manager, is an MBA from Ross School of Business and previous associate at Deloitte. | Women, minority, and LGBTQA+ led and operated company with great traction thus far. After watching the insane rise of Liquid Death in grocery stores around the Boston area, I believe that Open Water can take a portion of this market by demonstrating that they are doing social and environmental good with their products and services. |
| Endaoment | Seed | $2.5MM | Station 13, Chapter One Ventures, Framework Ventures | The founding team is well versed in public good and administration work with a combined ~four decades of experience in this space. Robbie, President and CEO, is a serial entrepreneur in the philanthropic development space. | Introducing a completely traceable giving platform has been long overdue. With a great UI/UX design, and their on-chain infrastructure and web-based philanthropic services making giving faster and more transparent, their product is set to take off. Not to mention their extremely strong founding crew and great adoption metrics so far. |
